Most simple BOVs and wastegates just simply react to intake pressure - if it's higher than it's supposed to be, it'll open up and let excess air out. This happens mostly when you've got the turbo spun up nice and good and then lift the throttle to shift..... throttle body snaps shut, turbo is still spinning air into the intake system, pressure builds up real quick in the intake and intercooler, wastegate spring force is overcome and it opens up to dump that extra pressure.

That said, some big turbo builds have the wastegates open even during wide open throttle. The turbo can supply more boosted air pressure than the engine can safely handle at lower RPM. The wastegate usually closes in the top end to force feed tons of air at high speed, just to snap open again for a gear change.

At the end of the day, in either case, the power delivery should be SMOOTH. If you have a wastegate that's acting up, it'll feel off and inconsistent... maybe the spring is toast - or if it's electronic, the pressure sensor acting up or the servo in it is wonky, etc. It'll manifest as surging/inconsistent power delivery.

So unfortunately the car sold before I was able to get to the dealership. I wasn't sure whether to make another thread about my next questions so I'll just post in here. I want a 2014 2.0 that is grey. There are no grey rspec being sold in the US right now that I can find. There is one 2013 rspec that is being sold right now but I'm not a fan of the red seats and I want the slightly better transmission in the 2014. So I'm wondering about just getting a base or premium and adding everything I want. If I get the premium it will have the features that I won't get in the r-spec such as the nav system (which I've read mixed reviews about the nav system, but I haven't seen much about adding a nav system to the base or rspec), sunroof and turn signal mirrors. So I would need to add lsd, brembos, seats and suspension. The lsd I can get from car-part.com for under 1000, same with the brembos. Are the rspec seats heated? Either way I saw a thread about someone adding the black ultimate seats to a base model. As far as the suspension goes, the rspec and ultimate have better suspension, but is that just sway bars and struts/springs? If thats all it is I would be upgrading the struts/springs and sways regardless. Thoughts?

It depends on what features are most important to you and the condition and price of the specific car in question. Since whatever you get is going to be used id go for best condition/lowest mileage/lowest price in that order regardless of trim level as long as your mechanically inclined. Things like suspention, brakes,lsd, and seats are most likely going to have some wear and could, and may out of necessity, need to be changed out with items superior to the origional parts. I have a 14 3.8 ultimate auto I purchaced new, the navigation, sunroof, drl's, heated seats, turn signal mirrors are cool and all, but honestly are all things I personally wouldn't really miss, you may feel differently but all those items could be added if there a must have for you.
