Hey everyone, so the other day i was on my way home from school and i got pulled over for a loud exhaust. He told me I have month to “fix” my car and he let me off with a warning. The issue is he knows i go to school there (he pulled me over a block away from the school). He told me he’s for sure going to be seeing me around since i go there everyday. So basically if he sees me later on he’s gonna try to give me a ticket for loud exhaust. I have stock exhaust with a muffler delete. I will admit, it is loud but it can be obnoxious if I drive like an ass. With normal driving it is louder than stock obviously but it isn’t crazy loud if I keep the rpms down so i don’t see why it’s such a problem. I live in Illinois and the laws suck here. So I am kind of at a crossroads here. I don’t have my stock muffler anymore, so i can’t just slap it back on. If i buy a used stock muffler, I can’t fit it on cause since i got a muffler delete, they cut the pipe right before where it bolts on, So if i got a used stock muffler or aftermarket axle back, i can’t just bolt it on cause i don’t have that piece anymore. I have been told by a few of my friends to just leave it how it is. If i do that i’ll definitely drive slow and quiet around my school. Another thing i thought about though was, would it be helpful to weld a muffler to the Y pipe on each side? i have a Y pipe coming from the midpipe. I would love your suggestions or any insight as to what a better setup would be. I personally like the sound but the drone on the highway can be annoying at times.

It really all depends on what type of sound you're looking for as well as what your definition of "loud" is. Welding mufflers on each end would definitely make it quieter than a muffler delete. I'd recommend looking up videos of the ark grip exhaust on the gc since that has a similar setup to what you're describing. Now it won't sound exactly the same... that all depends on what mufflers you use, size, position, etc. But it should give you a general idea of how a similar type of setup will change the car's exhaust note.

to me, I would say “loud” is how it is right now. Just regular cruising it drones and is very raspy as well. Not to mention the drone is horrible on the highway. the sound I am looking for is a nice low grumble, i want it to be loud but not too loud when i get on the gas and quiet when i am just doing some regular driving. Recommendations?

Honestly what you want is like every exhaust for our cars. I personally have the magnaflow with test pipes and it's quiet when I want it to be and growls at WOT.

How much did it cost you? Currently i’m looking for a cat back because I can’t use an axle back since i don’t have the piece where it would connect. I’m kind of on a budget here so any advice is helpful

get a decibel reader, video tape you recording you doing a reading from 20 and feet and 50 feet away with someone reving it to 2k~3k rpm. if it reads under 85, then you're good.
It will be even better if you can get a smog/IM shop to record it.

Take it to court with the recording, documented proof with instruments will normally be held in higher regard over someone's bias.

if it's above that, then you're SOL and going to have to change it.

The CNT V3 and the Turboxs exhausts are the some of the cheapest that I'm aware of, they're within the $500 range. There are also the ebay cat-backs but I really wouldn't trust the quality on those. If you're on a really tight budget your best bet would be to go custom and have a shop weld in some mufflers for you.

The magnaflow cost me about 850ish if I remember correctly. But since you're on a budget I would say either get the CNT catback but they have fitment issues or do what Rspec said and get some mufflers put in.

I would check the exact verbage of the statute in your state or municipalitie in which you were cited in. Where im at the statute is "exhaust modified to make noise" if its not stock or a stock equivalent replacement of the same db rating and its any louder than stock its technically illegal for use on a public roadway. I dont know if this is the case where your at but thought it might be helpful. Ive heard CA. has become very intolerant regarding modified exhausts.

Sounds like you've run into a dorky prick. Youre screwed. You can either spend money to fix her, or on ticket(s). What city/state are you in ?

Here we go again !

You might need to get a new or preferably used stock exhaust, install it, take it to your local DMV or police station, or find a officer willing to inspect it and sign off on the ticket that the problem has been corrected. Take that to court and hopefully the judge will dismiss the citation since the problem was corrected. You could always reinstall your aftermarket exhaust after that and take your chances afterwards.
