Steering Wheel Core Confusion

So I ordered a steering wheel from Socal Garageworks and since I have a 2013 R-spec I chose the 2013+ R-spec option. Well come to find out my old wheel, while although being in an R-spec, is not the typical R-spec wheel, it is actually the same layout as the regular 2013+ genesis coupe wheel. You can see in the photo, the area marked in red is the biggest difference, that is where the buttons mount. The other difference is the location of the two holes where the air bag mount. This means that nothing from the regular genesis coupe wheel can be swapped over aside from maybe the colored trim piece.

So if you have a 2013 R-Spec and are thinking about buying a Socal Garageworks wheel through their core exchange policy it may not be a bad idea to remove the stock wheel and check to see what style you have. I have no idea why Hyundai would change something like this but just something to be aware of.

PS.. I think I have a source for new buttons and an airbag, so all I need now is a new back plastic piece, the one that has the screws for the airbag for the R-spec, No paddle shifters. So if anyone's got one laying around that will fit this new wheel let me know!!

I'd imagine you would be fine as long as you selected the 2013+ R-Spec & Ultimate Option under the genesis coupe year drop-down on their website. I'd be almost willing to bet this is a 2013 model year issue since it always seems when companies do a facelift model that there is a bit of stuff that can sometimes take until the next model year to get sorted out. Not sure though just a thought.

I ran into this exact issue when I ordered my Socal wheel for my 14 ultimate with paddle shifters. I wanted to retain my stock wheel, which is the one on the left but received a wheel built on a core matching the photo on the right. Air bag and plastics do not interchange between the two. Greg at Socal made it right obtaining the correct core and remakingmy wheel. Ive posted before regarding the issue with the different cores although I was under the impression the wheel on the left was specific to the ultimate auto, I diddent know it was also used on the rspec.

I wonder if that was before they had the different options for the R-spec/Ultimate wheels on the site. Greg said the wheel on the left is a typical r-spec/Ultimate wheel, while the one on the right is a regular gen coupe wheel.

Yeah he had said about making me a new wheel with the other style core but I asked if it would just be easier to source the new plastic pieces and airbag instead. So far I think we have everything except the back plastic piece that bolts the airbag in. So if you know anyone that has that let me know!

Yes he/I discovered the issue with my wheel, before that he was confident through his research with Hyundai that all models used the same core wheel. I sent many photos of my wheel with P/N and he was able to figure it out, not Greg's fault he received bad info from Hyundai. I considered switching the airbag and plastics to match the different wheel but diddent want to chance any other unforseen differences possibly resulting it a air bag light on, radio controls not working, etc.

The wheel on the right is the same as my 2010 track.

So I wonder if for the 2013 year they just carried over that style for the R-spec or maybe at least the early 2013 models. I'm not sure the exact manufacture date of mine off the top of my head. Regardless it's unfortunate. Thankfully Greg is trying to help me out by sourcing replacement plastic or worse case has to make a new wheel.

Not to revive a dead thread but is anyone else waiting on a socal garageworks wheel order from around December? I just keep getting told manufacturing is backed up or by then end of each month for the past few months. Just want to make sure I'm not the only one.

I got my wheel well over a year ago and it was the same process. Took forever, but worth the wait IMO.

We are in about the same boat, we discovered that the core for the 2013 was different from the other 2013 models so I had a steering wheel but it didn't work for my car so I had to send it back. It was nice while I had it...lol

I bought the wheel in January of 18 and received it Feb 20th or so. The only issue I encountered when i was installing the wheel was the bottom mounting brackets for the plastic trim piece had some resin on the holes, making them too small for the plastic to push through to screw together properly. Nothing a drill bit to rem out a bit of the resin material to make it fit. The wheel is beautiful and has held up great in the Florida sun. ( 2015 Ultimate 3.8)

Yeah unfortunately it's been over a year now since the order was placed. Not sure what to expect at this point. I have a feeling that I may not be alone in this situation of year long lead times from them...
