I hear with the 3.8 the turbo is not really enough bang for the buck. A mild nitrous system might do you better.

Welcome! Good to have you.

You need to build the block for high rev power or for turbo power so keep that in mind. Head work also has very positive results. Ain't cheap! If you're a 1320-type I'd definitely point you toward nitrous and a final drive swap. If you want to build an all round road warrior strap yourself and your wallet in for a long ride. Fun and reasonable car to do it in, though. You made a good, if a bit challenging, choice.

I was looking at putting a turbo on my 3.8 Gt, priced it out with and it was like 4K, but produces 500hp, or at least that’s what it is advertised as

You won't hit those numbers on a BK1 3.8T without building the block, beefing up the fuel system, and getting a good tune. Anything over 4 psi on a 6266 turbo on the BK1 and you're risking blowing the engine. That will give you somewhere in the range of 350-375whp. Build the block, heads, fuel system, supporting mods, etc. and you can get far in excess of that. Keep in mind that while a nitrous system may be cheaper, if you spray too low in the RPM range you run the same risks as running too much boost on a turbo kit.
