New Members ***PLEASE READ***

First off i would like to welcome you to the forum.

I'm not a Moderator, just a simple member that lurks in the shadows until my personal opinion is needed. I speak the truth and only but the truth.
With that being said, let me begin why I started this Thread.

Since I joined about a year ago, Ive noticed that people just don't like to read and want answers before they have a question. Senior members don't mind helping new members as long as the new member have shown that they really have done the research. Nothing in life is handed out for free, so please do your research. You want to make your car go fast? Research on how its done. All combustion engines work with the same principle.

It really grinds my gears when a new member asks about "Hey guys, I'm looking for an intake, where can I find one? Noob here lol".... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use search! This is not funny at all.... it's frustrating as f*ck. Why you ask? Well anytime any member writes anything in this forum, it automatically gets indexed for search, which means if I'm looking for a new intake for my car and there's a billion threads about intakes, I'm gonna be spending the whole night researching on intakes, instead of taking a few minutes. If you use search you will see a lot of threads have been locked, derailed due to new members not searching and senior members getting frustrated.

Where is that wonderful tool called "SEARCH"? The search bar is located on your top right corner of your screen. PLEASE use it before starting any new threads.

I spend countless hours researching about mods, specs, etc before i post anything, YOU SHOULD TOO!

Second thing... Trolling, hazing, harrasing, etc in this forum makes you look like a dumass and violates the forum rules. Do you want to look like a dumbass to other people and get banned?

and last but not least...

Just like everything else in life, this and other forums also have rules that need to be followed. Especially in the classifieds section. Please Read them when you first join and if you're a senior member that is breaking the rules, also do us a favor and re-read it. If you can't read english, please contact a member who does and have them explain to you what the rules are. I can help out anyone who speaks spanish.

Forum Rules:

other than that, welcome to the forum

While I agree fully, nothing will change. I've moderated the same site, for a car that hasn't been made in 13 years, and the questions keep coming...over and over again. Hell, we even pop up similarly titled threads when the person begins to type their subject line; no joy.

So would this be the right thread to ask if my intake will void my warranty?

That's what that sound was!
OP I really wish something like this was mandatory to read by newbies. Not the first or last time someone is gonna try though. I thank you for the effort.

I know this thread is gonna die off soon and I know it may not do much, but if I can get at least one person to follow the rules then the thread kinda sorta work.
If I had one wish, it wouldn't be for world peace, it would be for people to have more common sense.
I work with people all day long and I personally lost all hope on humanity.

Some of the senior members also need attitude adjustments though. There are many on here who have a complete lack of common courtesy when it comes to communicating with another member of the human species in a civil way.

While I understand some of the questions people ask are just asinine ("has anyone installed an M&S Type D grill"), the responses from our senior members are commonly negative, and just as detrimental to the community. Why belittle a new member and chastise them for asking a question, when a gentle nudge in the right direction or some constructive criticism is much more effective? The senior members who do so much for the community are not supposed to be scaring away new comers by being complete douche bags. I understand some light-hearted joking and teasing, or some Internet slang being thrown around, but not every response needs to be a reference to troll face and other memes (however funny they may be).

As far as troll-like activity, and being an Internet hard ass or an armchair expert, I guess that's life. Some people are just extremely immature and arrogant, and I would be willing to bet money that the vast majority of the Internet **** talkers are either living in their parents house or would get their asses beat if they talked like that to someone in real life.

It would be awesome if new members had to read something like this upon joining. Stickies don't do enough sometimes.

Oh, and word to the wise on anyone reading this that's new. Use GOOGLE instead of the forum's search. Looking for Injen intakes for the 3.8? Type into google "Injen intake 3.8 GenCoupe" and you'll find more relevant results that will still link you to GenCoupe. Just something I've found.

^THIS x A Grillion.

It wasn't too long ago I was a complete n00b to car modding. I never modded a car before my GenCoupe. After browsing through countless threads I figured what I wanted to mod and how to mod it. There's plenty of helpful information out there. Albeit, quite cumbersome and messy. The important thing is with search is that it is a computer. It doesn't have the human element. It can only do so much, and there's always the problem that you don't even know what and how to ask it a question.

If you're complaining that people ask the same damn question over and over again, then do something about it. I think this thread is a step in the right direction, but we still have work to do. If you go to other forums, they make it loud and clear:

Read this before posting anything --- threads will be deleted without notice - xda-developers

I would like to see a wiki feature added to this site. If new members are constantly asking "what mods should I do to my car?" then it would be easier to have a sticky that links to a page with mods that you can do, one that can be constantly updated.

People shouldn't be so arrogant. If someone asks a stupid question, how about ignoring it? Are you that insecure with yourself that you need to make others feel dumb in order to make yourself feel better? In a forum of all places. Sad.

Why should a member take any time to baby newbs when the newbs don't take any time to actually do any leg work on their own? Put stupid in and get stupid out, it's that simple, really. If you coddle bad behavior you just encourage it. All it takes is one newb seeing another newb ask a stupid question, without being belittled, and the tidal wave of newbness will continue.

Because if u don't baby newbs....then your just going to keep running into the same thing over and over again. Either way awesome thread....i agree with the post about common questions section! It would help meddle some of the dumber posts...

But i think something that about this forum is awesome....although not always stickied ......are the "why you need catch can, turbo 101, how exhaust works, and other threads that take a foriegn subject to others.....aka me at one point minus school theory.....and explains some of the concepts.

To those that make amazing threads such as these i am grateful. Like i said a newbie section separated from the blob of info that includes fact oriented articles is a good idea!

Ok. So, someone asks a "stupid" question, or a question where the answer is in several areas of the forum. You see a thread titled "M&S Type D grill: who's got it?" .... Yeah, I completely agree, very annoying, and almost comical. But here's what you do (I assume the member who doesn't want to to take time to "baby" others): DONT POST. I don't go posting in the 2.0T section, or the technical question areas often, because I'll be the first to admit it's above my knowledge level. I do read up quite often on almost all sub forums to understand more about what I didn't know.

So, this guy with the "stupid" grill thread. There are 3 groups of people on here, and these are their responses to this thread. 1, ignore it (fine). 2, bash him, with no help, or very little guidance on how to find info and how to use a forum better (not ok). 3, those who will help him, point him in the right direction, and then politely and courteously advise him to search and do more research before clogging the forum with common questions. Now, grill guy learned a little, and knows that "hey, this guy is pretty nice, if I know something or can help him out, I'll try". The hope is to cut down on butt-hurt members flaming another over and over any time they post.

You can be 1 or 2, but the aim of this thread is to create more people like 3, and to create less new members like the hypothetical grill guy. It's just a shame that many of our premier members on here, that do so much for the community with engine tear downs, DIYs on coils, fabricate their own turbo kits, etc. fall into the 2nd category. If a new member sees their first thread or posts get ridiculed by a popular member who has hundreds or thousands of posts, and other follow suit of that popular member, what's the likelihood of that new member ever wanting to post again? People talk about how this forum has gone downhill, and to me, this attitude and action is the main reason why.

If i want to know the difference between a top-mount, v-mount, or front-mount intercooler, I could check google, or I could come on to a car community and attempt to start a discussion on the subject, which takes into account people's personal experiences and expertise, rather than a very dry write-up on a technical website (although the legitimacy of knowledge by armchair experts can be called into question).

This thread is a good read in my book, shows how diverse the forum is. Been a member for a long time but I was hardly ever on it until I got my GC four months ago. I can see where most of you are coming from. Some want it to be more functional for techies, quick searches for right answers. Some realize it's a community with it's own way about doing things. Everything in this world works great until you put people into the situation.

I'm very picky when it comes to what mods I will be doing. And when I'm ready to harass someone here about it (after looking into it myself), I hope I do harass someone in the proper manner (thread). If I don't, I won't loose sleep over it. After all, this is a forum for GC owners to share ideas... even if that means stupid ones.

The problem compounds itself as the member base grows and time passes. Take it from someone who mods 130k+ member base for a car that hasn't been produced in 13-20 years...

That said, this concept still won't work, no matter how much I agree with it. You can't force the lazy/ineptitude out of anyone.
