2.0T M/T Weird Problem

I've been a happy owner of a 2.0T M/T 2010 GC for almost 3 months now. Up until tonight, I've had absolutely no issues. Had a weird issue arise on my way home from work tonight...

It was a pretty cold night, around -20 degrees Celsius. Let the car warm up for a couple minutes as I always do, and pulled out of the parking lot with no issues. About halfway through my drive home I noticed a bit of a 'bumping' sensation, kind of felt like I had a flat - but it went away after a minute or so. Then I noticed that my revs weren't really dropping at all when I let off the gas. The first (and only) stoplight I got to, when I shifted to neutral right before stopping, the revs went up to around 3-4k on it's own and wouldn't drop. I was only stopped for a few seconds and was able to pull away fine, but I noticed when I was downshifting for turns, the car seemed to accelerate on it's own, even though I was not on the gas at all..

A little while later as I came to a stop sign, the brake pedal wouldn't go down! It was as if there was something stopping it from depressing any more than a half inch or so. Luckily the roads were dead and I was going fairly slow already, so I was able to make my turn. I put it in neutral and coasted to a stop with the help of the E-brake. While stopped and in neutral, the car started revving by itself. Every couple seconds it would rev up to around 3.5k, drop back down to 1k and repeat.

I shut the car off, waited a minute or so, turned it on and same thing with the revving, even when I put it in gear and held the clutch down. I was about 1km from home at this point, so I managed to get it in second gear and tried to get home. After a few meters, I couldn't give the car any gas. Engine was still running, but pressing the pedal did nothing, CEL went on, then the brake wouldn't work again... Stopped, shut it off and went through the exact same process again. Managed to get it in 3rd gear and got it home. I noticed that the car was making a weird noise every couple seconds... hard to explain it, but sounded like the bass from the stereo, but it was turned off.

CEL light is still on.. Brake pedal seems to work intermittently, whether the engine is on or off, sometimes the brake pedal will depress, sometimes it won't...

Sorry, I know this is long, but I wanted to be detailed.

tl;dr : Car started revving by itself to 3k and back down to 1k every couple seconds. Brake pedal would not depress more than an inch - but would then randomly work after stopping. CEL light came on and car would not respond when giving it gas.. Again, worked for a bit after restarting the engine.

Anyone ever experience anything like this? I'll be calling my local Hyundai dealer tomorrow, but wanted to see if anyone here could shed some light.

That's a first for me and I have been around for quite a while...

Sounds like something in the ECM is acting up due to cold or a combination of multiple things. If you are in the USA, use your 24 hour roadside to get it towed to the dealer and let them look at it. Something either isn't grounded right, isn't connected right, or just out right having issues.
sounds like limp mode and some other stuff...
what have you done to your car? any mods?

when my car went into limp mode it would rev up to 3k on it's own then release pressure and rev up to 3k again over and over. I had a video of it somewhere on the forum a while back.. still not sure why my car randomly goes into limp mode and does that which it has been doin this past weekend too.
Thanks for the input guys. No mods at all.. I'm in Canada, but I have the Hyundai roadside assistance (purchased by the original owner) so hopefully they can tow it to the dealer for me.

Tsukuba - what you described with your revs sounds exactly like what was happening to me. Did it have any effects on your brakes as well? CEL?

It didn't have any effects on my brakes though, however I did have a CEL.
Made a quick video showing the rev problems. Wasn't revving as high this morning as it was last night, but the brake pedal problem was still intermittent.

Mine did this also, after I installed a replacement Throttle body, would rev to ~2.5k then drop and kept doing that until it stopped suddenly.

Pretty sure it has to do with the TPS in the TB...I'll upload the video shortly...
Here's the video, sorry for the loud music @ first during the part where you see the tach go up and down on it's own, then it stops so you can hear the car revving freely on its own.

EDIT: Sorry for the crutch shot...
Looks like the same thing mine was doing. Just had the car towed to the dealership. Still doing the same thing, but the CEL went off. What did you end up doing, if anything Mcmonopoly?
Weird thing is, there was nothing changed with the car. The only thing different I did last night was play music from a USB for the first time...

The brake pedal thing is just messed up though. Thank god the roads were clear and I wasn't going too fast when that happened

In my case, the problem was the actual Replacement Throttle body, or from digging further, the installation process was missing a crucial step which led to the ECU not seeing the new TB properly, leading to the problem seen in the video.

I replaced it with the stock TB and everything was fine.

About the brakes, only time you will lose brake power is if the car has lost all engine power or if booster line gets disconnected I guess...

If the car was revving high maybe there wasn't anything enough vacuum/pressure in the booster line to help you with your braking.

There is physically nothing that can prevent you from pressing the brake pedal, even if the engine is off, the difference will be how hard you have to press the pedal to brake.

Also It may have to do with the ABS system which is connected to the brake lines, so if you had a quirk maybe the ECU went AWOL for a short bit...But thats on the far side of reality, most likely a sensor went bad or something.

The dealership is better equipped to diagnose this problem.

This is the kind of thing about DBW that scares me, but the brake pedal shouldn't be affected. Best of luck
only once did I check the code of my CEL cause I borrowed my friends reader.. but it read two codes. one for limp mode and one for the TB sensor. I've never touched that sensor before though, so I'm not sure why it would show that. I've been having problems recently with the CEL and car going into limp mode again, last thing I did was reinstall my intake that I had off for about a week and a half...

I would check the TB connection, to make sure it's connected properly and that there's no contaminants first.

Then If all fails, I would take the TB off and check for gunk build up behind the butterfly plate, there was a TSB about 2.0T TB gunking up faster than normal, I know mine was VERY dirty.

Then if all else fails, take it in and have the dealer check the code and TSBs.

Here's a couple shot of the back of the TB:

After only 9000miles or so on the car...

Hope this helps.

Just got the car back from the dealership. They said it was limp mode and all they did was update the ECM and it's running fine... hopefully it stays that way!
man I didn't know about that TSB. I'll have to take my car in and have them check... I'm at 26k miles and haven't checked the actual TB. I'll take a look later.... Also, I think my recent problems might have been caused by my intake filter falling off without me knowing lol possibly too much air for the sensor and it's not used to it yet?
This is happening to mine right now, went to get food and i was in line at a drive through. It started reving up to 5K so i turned the car off because i thought itwould blow the engine. So after doing this twice it drovea few feet to get of the drive through. Then it revs up again to 5K and i shut it off again, going to call the dealer right now. The mod on this car an airfilter 2.0t base model with 68K miles predominantly highway miles.
Check the trottle body. Have you ever cleaned it?
I took it back to the dealer, I never had it cleaned before. When I took in they recommended having it done every 3000 miles here in California because of the fuel.
On the way to visit family in traffic and this damn thing starts acting up again same as before. I noticed it at 15-20mph as the car kept acceleratin on its own. Stopped turned the car off waited about 30sec and it still does it.
Now on christmas eve sitting on the side of the road and this time it wont even start back up.
