Sporting some unique bodywork the 2016 Hyundai Genesis Coupe has been caught undergoing early testing.

The next-generation sports car appears to grow significantly in size with a longer rear section that has been tacked onto this test mule’s rear bumper. It also gives the appearance of a wider overall body.

As a result, we can expect the 2016 Hyundai Genesis coupe to offer additional trunk space while the extra length will also allow a longer roofline possibly giving the rear passengers more space. In that sense, it will be a true Genesis Coupe, moving upscale and offering more of the sedan’s luxury.

Looks like an actual dual exhaust in there, so must be the V6 right?? or V8 maaayyyybbeeee???????? :D:D:D

well guess ill be waiting for the 2017… but i did notice the engine bay was messy?

The frame is definitely larger as noted from the front and rear bumpers. They just hastily crammed a 2015 body on the larger frame and made it look as good as they could for testing. I would assume that the larger frame was to accommodate a larger engine and possibly even the sedan's AWD system. It would be interesting to see some more photos of the engine bay and maybe even under the back end of the car.

Anyone have any idea where the photos were taken? Looks like somewhere around Death Valley to me. 4.44 a gallon, and everything is in English, along with the desert area in the background.



It would be fun to find the exact motel in the background. :)

I think those are Michigan plates also, but there is nowhere around there that is that high for gas.

Frame? Car has a unibody, look under your car for once, ain't got no frame.

The body panels still bolt to it, the bumper, fenders, hood, etc, can all be changed to different shapes and such, and could be made to bolt on a different frame (or unibody), whatever you wanted to call it.

Same size. Just a fake bumper and front end to hide the new subtle changes for 2016. If they were going to make the entire car larger, they would have done a complete redesign.

My guess is the Hyundai/Kia proving grounds. Its in the AZ desert. But yea, looks like the same size to me

It's a test mule. The internals are different than current and they use a current body on it because they haven't completed thay part of the design yet.
Looks the same to me, with some extra stuff riveted on and some stuff removed. otherwise tha same!

Please stick a V8 in it for '17. Itll be between this and the next Z for me. Or a Cayman S if i can afford it.

A Prototype Is Not A Test Mule!

Well, it looks "the same" because it is a test mule, not a prototype. This is a Hyundai rarity, that really hasn't been seen to some degree since the first generation Genesis sedan first spottings in late 2005. Hyundai usually publically tests upcoming models in their production body design and never in hacked together mules, since a lot of the suppliers are in-house.

Well you are right somewhat, it is a test mule. Prototypes representative of the production body are coming right around the corner.

That's clearly not the production body. Not sure what you owned prior to your Genesis (or any other non-Hyundais) and if you took note of its/their development, as usually future models will be tested in an incumbent model's body with alterations made to it. Following that, will be public road testing of the final body design.

Hyundai has almost notably been seen/spied with only the latter test vehicles and not mules. To some degree, the rejected BH Genesis design from 2004, was almost representative of this, in being used as a test prototype(later as a mule) during 2005. The final production BH Genesis design prototypes weren't spotted until the first half of 2007 after final HMG board re-approval in 2006.

Yes, that is somewhat the case here. Good explanation. Something that seems to have flown over everyone's heads, as that this is strictly testing components of the successor. It is NOT representative of what the vehicle looks like. Look to the Venace concept for that, as previously stated by many sources.

The BH coupe prior to the SEMA concept in October 2007 and the production unveiling in 2008, had an all-red taillight cluster with no reverse lights in photography from May through autumn of 2007.





Evaluation testing hadn't started yet, therefore such an item wasn't final until later on in 2007, as first seen on the SEMA '07 preview. If we remember, the current model is Eric Stoddard's variation of the 2004 HCD-8 concept (developed in 2003), that reached final design and production approval in 2006. The Venace will see production similarly.

This BH-derived test mule was developed at HATCI, so that is why you are seeing a Michigan plate. It is likely Death Valley testing a little while ago.

This BH coupe body "test mule" developed at the Hyundai American Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) in Superior Township, MI, is not representative of the production design, for the upcoming model it is testing. It is a rarity to publically see a "test mule" from Hyundai, but there is clearly a difference between a test mule and a full fledged prototype, something which people continue to mix-up (see examples below).

Also the fact you are seeing this, is highlighting to the public that Hyundai is undergoing one of their most important redesigns ever, that waiting for actual prototypes has been skipped in favor of earlier testing with BH-derived mules. This vehicle being tested, will be one of the most thoroughly developed Hyundai passenger vehicles ever. The production bodies are not ready for public road trials yet, but are being developed for that.

You are correct on the first part, but on the second part regarding it being "not finished", not quite. Body design of the BH coupe successor has since been frozen/finalized for production, hence why you are now seeing test mules. Even this stage of development will rarely be reached, without a finalized production body design.

I figure you don't know what to think, as the public has never really seen a Hyundai test mule, but only prototype vehicles (protos are the ones representative of the production body, not mules).

Only in the case of 2015 Mustang did that happen ('15 Mustang mules in 6/2012, '15 Mustang fascia mule, final app. frozen in early Dec. 2012, prototypes from May 2013), as in the S550 Mustang mules were running before the final design freeze in December 2012. The 2015 Mustang was partially redone and delayed from April 2014 anniversary sales launch. This was due to last minute changes ordered by senior Ford management, to retain "classic Mustang DNA", unlike the BH successor that is on schedule.

Hyundai usually will finalize a new model around roughly 2 years before start of series production, with basic design approval around half a year before a design freeze. This was one of the first premium Hyundai designs approved under CDO Peter Schreyer, as the new 2015 Genesis sedan (DH) was frozen almost 3 years ago before he arrived in 2013, despite "copying" accusations made against it or being Schreyer-influenced. Schreyer basically had no involvement on design of the Genesis and 2015 Sonata.

If I remember, even ex-BMW designer Chris Chapman had barely been at Hyundai for 1-3 months at the final DH design freeze in early 2012 and had no involvement, being that the new DH design was reached in 2011. Same as the new LF Sonata's design, which was finalized well over 2 years ago by June 2012 and was over 80% complete by January of 2012.

So just cause it look like the previous version? You guys gotta think outside the box. They might be testing the new drivetrain here... With the old body.
