Budget FMIC Build

I was looking at the Garrett stock intercooler replacement. According the the ATPturbo site, it is 29 x 8 x 3 w/ 2.25" inlets. I have an intercooler laying around from my Tiburon turbo build that is 28" long with a core that is 22 x 7 x 3 with 2.25 inlets.

I have no problem taking the front end apart. I think I'll run into a problem with the actual mounting of the new intercooler. I see the strips that are commonly used. Where do people get these? Are they machined or something I can run somewhere and purchase and cut and bend to size?

On this car, length isn't really an issue. Its more of the height, because of the crash bar.

A power drill,a hammer,an anvil, an acetylene torch,a cutting attachment for said torch and a 3'x2" piece of steel stock from your local hardware store and you have any sort of bracket you might need to make it work.
Mike, I have a welder. If you need to weld on some supports tabs or cut the crash bar a little, you know where I am at.

No modifications required for this one. Should fit almost exactly like the Garrett stock replacement. I'll see once I get the bumper off to install my new grille.

Is the crash bar really what it sounds like? Im not being sarcastic,Im honestly interested. It sounds like its a bar thats there in case you crash,some sort of structural support needed in an accident. Is it really a good idea to cut or remove it?
The crash bar is exactly how it sounds. Key structural component.
they wont have to cut to much...just maybe a notch or too...shouldn't hurt anything...more then likey that intercooler will just need support tabs...doesnt look to big

.... in a crash. that thing is srs weight reduction if you remove it! :D

Exactly, I just need to fab up a couple tabs.
What is the Garrett FMIC good for HP wise? Will it handle 400whp, im in the market for a new FM. Would like to keep the crash bar but don't want to keep buying FM's as i build HP

I plan on doing this with my crashbar (notching it) when I install the Buschur Race FMIC.

From what I've read it will.
think I might get this, looks like it should mate up to the Injen piping with a few custom elbows. Has anyone had a problem with this IC?

Dude the crash bar is the actual bumper. Or did you think a platic bumper cover is going to hold a head on crash at +20mph
so have you made any progress with this yet?
Not yet, I may work on it this weekend.

you might consider a 14" demo saw and for those really tight spots i'm sure you could borrow some jaws of life from your local rescue mob! :rofl::rofl::rofl:

seriously it was funny!!!
:hsugh::hsugh::hsugh:

nah it is :fleshbox::fleshbox::fleshbox:

here in oz your not allowed to touch key structural parts makes them instant canaries (yellow windscreen sticker putting your car off the road till fixed checked and signed off!) $10k fine if caught driving it again!

Notching it will weaken it. Think about it,if its going to break,its going to break at those notches. Ive been in enough accidents to be very skeptical about weakening a part called a "crash bar"
Better than other kits that just remove it all together.
