Hi guys. I'm in the process of building a carbon fiber CAI for my 2016 coupe.( I currently have an Injen SRI and I don't like the hot air it pulls it. Not relevant just a backstory.) My main question is what epoxy/ resin should I use? I know I need a high temperature epoxy/ resin but I'm not sure which one to use, because I want a crystal clear finish on my carbon fiber intake, no discolored mixes or brands.... Any help would be appreciated 馃槂

Ps- I can't find the answer I'm looking for, so if you say "read around, or do a search" can you provide the link to the answer so I can actually read it. Then feel free to troll lol. Thank you

You'll not want to use high temp epoxy/resin.

Reason being, is that you will need to use pre-impregnated carbon fiber, and the process involves requiring to use an autoclave.

Why are you set on CF exactly? You can still get great CAI kits that arent CF.
There are a few good youtube videos you can find though discussing proper resins for certain projects

why do I need pre-peg? I was planning to layer the resin over top each carbon fiber sleeve, using the poor man's vacuum bagging technique (electrical tape) to get rid of air holes

Why are you set on CF exactly? You can still get great CAI kits that arent CF.
There are a few good youtube videos you can find though discussing proper resins for certain projects
to be honest I love the carbon fiber look and want to do as much carbon fiber custom work as I can. I'll spend the extra $$ to learn if I have to, but I want to do everything custom

"high temp" carbon fiber pertains to a temp resistance of 350~400*F+

resin need to cure evenly, otherwise you're going to have hot/cool spots while it cures. That and in a constantly varying temp environment is going to crack.

Do you know why in all the instructions for resin, that they say to have 3 containers, 2x A/B containers and a mix container? An even mix of the resin and catalyst is critical, more so that the A:B ratios being correct.
This is 5x more so on thin parts. Thick parts can radiate heat and cure more evenly because there is more mass to allow the heat to transfer, thin parts can't do that effectively.

Just get a aluminum pipe section and wrap some cf vinyl over it, then clear coat it.

I know people have made carbon fiber intakes without using an enclave, and just let it cure in room temperature. Not sure if they used high temp epoxy/ resin. But I am also not sure of my engine bay temperature. I do not want my epoxy/ resin melting.

I know I can cheap out and do an aluminum pipe wrapped in carbon fiber but that's not the same lol. Cheap. Fast. Reliable. Can only have 2

the time you put into it (which you can't get back) just to make a pipe, you're going to find that it wasn't worth it.

and resin doesn't melt, it cracks and shatters.... well the kind used for composites.

Fair enough, good point lol. It will take awhile, but worth it... In my opinion, hell yea! Me personally. I love working on my car. I don't care how long it takes, I like to do everything myself. And what I don't know I try to outsource, and learn from that way. No wife, no kids, just free time. And when I'm not working on my car I just play PS4, so trust me when I say I have time to kill 馃槀

And plus I already purchased all the materials except epoxy resin, so I can't really turn back now.

Heres where you should have went to purchase all your materials. They are made with temp proof stuff already. Its quite simple to piece together whatever you need.

Lol I actually started with that idea and on that site. I was so close to getting that and coupling it together. But after some consideration I realized I wanted it flush, I don't like the look of couplings connecting pipes together, looks half assed in my opinion. And finding a ferrule the right size to connect the pipes together from the inside has proven to be a pain in the ass. So my ego kicked in a little more and said f- it, why not build 1 solid piece

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.Function should be most important .In the age of Smart phones I should have not be surprised .>:D

Would be a SMART idea to search the WORLD WIDE WEB and find a carbon fiber company that could answer your question .I would tell you what I used on my carbon fiber inlet but it might be again'st your "EGO" to use it .>:D

And I contacted epoxy/ resin companies as well, but they don't know the best one to use for this application because we don't know how hot it can get... Thats why I was hoping someone here might have an answer lol. And could I see a picture of it? If it's not discolored my ego shouldn't mind lmao

Under hood temps hover around 150 to 160 degrees in the 90-100 degree weather .

AHH THANK YOU!! So technically I don't need a high temp epoxy. This makes this sooo much easier 馃槂
