Welp my 3.5 week old CPO purchase took a dump.

My 2015 r-spec is the 5th (or 6th?) manual I’ve owned but it’s been a few years since I’ve driven a manual so when I noticed some difficulty getting into gear and grinding 5th I chalked it up to manual trans rustiness.

Then it got worse. I’m guessing about 70% of gear changes required double clutching; not the most fun thing to do during a 1 hour commute. Over the 2 weeks of trying to get someone from a local Hyundai dealership to call me back to schedule an appointment, I noticed tons of checklist items that were not addressed on the official Hyundai certified preowned checklist; that is, the list the techs use to ensure that the vehicle meets or exceeds the qualities of a Certified Preowned car.

Long story short, my baby is in the shop for the next 2 weeks but when I get her back, she’ll have a new clutch and flywheel, rear bumper, rear valance, plate lights, shift knob, new windshield, & new engine cover.

And if the new clutch & flywheel don’t solve all these ridiculous rattles and the inability to gracefully shift gears, a new tranny altogether.

</rant>

The takeaway is, thoroughly inspect your purchase before you buy, because the dude that inspected it before it went up for sale may not have.

The good news is that everything is under warranty and they gave me a 2019 Elantra to drive until my girl is ready to roll again. Silver lining.

Just needed to vent a bit.

That sux but at least its a CPO car and their taking care of you. When shopping for my then new 14 coupe i originally wanted it in a manual but wasn't impressed with the transmission or clutch feel after the test drive. Hopefully the clutch (and hopefully a new transmission) will get it into top shape.

Yeah it’s definitely a step down after test driving the Veloster N. That thing shifts like butter.
Yes a little disappointing. Theres lots of info here on improving the clutch and shifting using stiffer mounts, better quality fluids, etc. I went with the 8 speed ZF auto and have no regrets, still this should have never even been a issue with a modern vehicle. Hopefully they will get yours sorted and have you back on the road soon.

There are ways to make it shift better.
1, Either get a Meagan Racing Mount, or even better use 2 big 7" hose clamps and clamp the mount down to the mount crossmember.
2, Change out the fluid to a very low viscosity synchromesh oil, like Pennzoil Synchromesh, etc.
3, Change out the shifter bushings, or just go to a short throw shifter altogether.

Thanks for the info. Shifter bushings and Megan mount are actually on the top of my wishlist! I had an Act unsprung and Fidanza alum flywheel on my Tiburon back in the day and loved how responsive that setup was, so internals are on the list too; just farther down. Thanks again!

Curious. From what vehicle do you pull the ZF?

I was under the impression from information obtained here on this forum that the coupe's automatic transmission was a ZF or a ZF copy. At any rate if i misspoke or am misinformed please feel free to correct and educate me. It the stock 2014 8 speed auto.

Make sure they change out your hydraulic throwout bearing. It sounds like the source for many of the original symptoms you described.

the "TOB" has been an issue for many shifting issues for people on here.

The design is stupid. Basically the issue is with the clutch slave.
But with this stupid design the TOB and the slave is one part.

If it was designed as separate parts, then to swap out the slave would only take about 15~30 min once you can get under the car.
Because it's one part, the whole transmission has to come out to change it.

Yikes. Well I certainly don’t have the tools for all that. Car is still in the shop waiting on the aesthetic parts but the diff, clutch, and flywheel are done. Hopefully I’ll have it back this weekend and see how she drives.

The 8AT is a Korean made reverse engineered ZF, an exact ZF. (So its a ZF) Germany/Korea. Hyundai didnt bother with the licensing though.

Just like Mitsubishi is the last remaining producer of the F-15 strike eagle. USA/Japan.

Be careful what you wish for. I came from that community,...all Veloster turbo DCT's have been nothing but nightmares.
The tuners can't tune around the TCU protections,...the DCT does not get along well with spirited aggressive drivers in the longrun.

From their forums,...the only thing that bitches more than a woman is a Veloster, any variant, with a DCT. LOL.

Hyundais DCT experiments are kind of like Fords foray into the Constant Velocity Trans,...POS !

On paper they are an engineers wet dream, in the real world they are dealers and mechanics nightmares.

The BK1 2.0 auto tans is supposedly a clone of the one in the nissan titan.

The BK2 2.0 auto trans is the same as the 3.8 auto trans but with different gearing.
