I was wondering if I could just put in new piston and rods without having to take my engine to a shop. Like is it fine to build the engine without machining the cylinder?
If you have engine building experience yes but if not is almost like trying to launch a rocket without testing the engine first.
Every person I know that has built engines usually sends it to a shop to double check.
