Installed Fogs /DRL on my R-spec

So I went ahead and installed the LED DRL / Fog lights on my r-spec yesterday. I wired mine in so the LED DRL's are on whenever the car is running, and the fog lamps are on whenever the headlights are on. Here is a quick run down of where I wired them in:

First I tapped the factory harness in two places for the "signal" to activate the relays.

For the DRL's; on the passenger side of the car, there is a small fuse box. I opened that fuse box, and on the battery side of the IGN coil fuse (green 20a) I taped the red large red wire.

On the passenger side headlight (Do no use drivers side headlight), there is the pink primary wire (upper right hand corner if you are looking at the plug) I taped that for the signal wire for the fog lights.

I then mounted my relays under the small factory fuse box where you tap the ign. coil fuse wire.

I ran a primary power wire to the battery's positive terminal for the power for both relays. I used a 5a fuse for the DRL, and a 15a fuse for the fogs (You must use a fuse for each circuit.)

I grounded both relay's where under fuse box where the metal bracket that mounts the fuse box goes to the body.

Each fog light has 4 wires, one power for DRL's, one power for fogs, and one ground each. I made a small foot long harness for each fog light and put a 4 wire plug on them. This makes it simple to disconnect the DRL's/fogs when you remove the bumper. This small harness plugs into the fog lights with 4 small female blade contacts.

The body side wires all run to two 4 wire plugs to plug into the fog light harness.

I sleeved all the wires with braided wire loom sleeves, and used heat shrink at all the ends.

Here is a very crude diagram:

Thanks man, can't wait for mine to show up from korea, I just didnt want the DRL so I just got the fogs. Appreciate your write up, will help with my install. Where did you get the connectors to your fogs? Picture of your wire harness would be nice, any of where you hooked up, etc.

#9 ·
sexy did you get them on ebay or hyundai?

#12 ·
Nice, write up.

What is the size bulb used for the fog lights??

thanks

#14 ·
hmm i cant seem to find any H8L bulbs??

where did you get yours??

On that drawing, from the battery, to the #30 pins on the relays, I see no indication of a fuse or fuses. I'm sure it was just an oversight during the "drawing" stage, right? I assume that's what the rectangles in RED are for.

#16 ·
Correct, there is a fuse before each relay from the battery, that is what the red rectangles are on the diagram.

I used a 10A fuse for the fogs w/ LED bulbs, and a 3.5A fuse for the LED DRL's.

Happy with my results...

^^^^ Yep...

Actually haven't even looked into hooking them up yet. Just did the wiring into the engine bay, I'll get around to it sometime. I rarely drive at night so it isn't something I'm concerned with. Just wanted them for the look, hated the black plastic.

Mind doing a video of how your wiring is done? Do you plan on setting up a separate switch for it, or tapping into the factory harness.

It would be great, as I was planning on getting the DRL also, and just having them on for the "look" cause I would have no idea how to make them function.
So a video helps, cause I'm a :gc-noob:

Agreed. To much plastic going on in the bumper. I plan on running a grill thing in front of it. I commute with the car and don't want to risk a rock breaking the lens. Kinda like how the btrcc car is setup

Thats an interesting idea, like to see it when you get it done.

How about a link to what your talking about?

GCP, did you wire them into your Headlights or did you run it to a switch?

Sorta...

If you look at the wire diagram, I am powering both the DRL's and the Fogs off the battery in two whole new circuits. Each circuit has it's own relay.

The ignition turns on the DRL relay, so they are on whenever the car is running.

The headlights turn on the Fog light relay, so they are on whenever the headlights are on.

I personally tapped the +12v wire for the passenger low beam (which remain on when you turn on high beams), but since you are putting in HIDS, you could tap the +12v wire on the HID kit to turn on the relay for the fogs, and not touch your chassis harness. Just be sure do put a disconnect on that wire so you can remove your headlights.

Again... I strongly encourage you to cut off the factory bulb holder in the headlight, and install fully insulated connectors.... not only is it safer, but it will also help reduce the "noise". it would take less than 5 min to re-solder the factory bulb holders back in if you ever wanted to revert back to halogen bulbs.

Gcp, I'm sure u might not be able to take pics since its already on, but if possible, could u take a pic of the harness u made to connect to the 4 power connectors of the fog lights?

#40 ·
Somebody else has one in one of these threads, basically they both just attached single wire connectors to each pin and filled it with silicon to seal. There isn't any connector they used to the fog light/DRL assembly. Basically jury rigged, but it works. Then you use something like a 4 pin trailer connector on the other end of those wires.

Soo, I dont have multimeter or anything, how can I determine which one of the connections on the fog light power connection ports are the grounds, and which ones are the power to drl/fogs?

here are some pics to better illustrate the connection im talking about. these are my OEM foglights.

Look around, somebody already shows the 6 pin connector pin outs...

^^^BRO!, ur the man!!!! thanks a lot dude!

i've seen it, but still, no one has specified which connection is what. until GcoupeS did...

#48 ·
GCP, is it possible for you to take some pics of the wiring? im having some trouble, Also, which relays did you use. i think the ones i got are to big (30A) but again, im not sure.

#49 · (Edited)
Sure? what are you having trouble with? Are you following my wire diagram?

I used generic 20a automotive relays.

BTW... I don't think the fender liner will clear those wires you have sticking out the back of the fog light cover. There is no more than half and inch clearance between the back of the fog, and the fender liner.

well, luckily the fogs fit jsut fine, although i do agree, my hand can barely fit back there now. im not necessarily having a problem, but better yet want to see where/how you set up your relays. im trying to do the same setup as you. also, where the fuses went and such. sorry if i sound liek a nood requesting this.

^^^really appreciate it GCP!
