Another day another gencoupe post with a possible issue with my car...

The noise sounds identical to this:
Only happens at idle, and doesn't happen consistently. Car still drives fine and pulls fine.

I live in a very hot climate 110+ during the summer, around 100 now.
Mobil 1 5w30, changed 2kish miles ago.
SRI
CNT catback
68k miles
That's it.

Should I be worried?

No sir, GDI,..that is your HPFP. (High pressure fuel pump).

If you replace your tank LPFP, everything gets even louder. If you replace your fuel lines with SS, it gets even louder.

When it starts making the noise, turn off the AC and/or windshield defrost.
Listen if the noise is still there.
If no noise then noise if possibly coming from the AC pump.

remove the belt, and let it run for like 15~30 sec.
Listen and hear if the noise is still there.
If no noise then possibly coming from the water pump or power steering pump.

Im having this exact noise. Did you ever find out what it was?

No sir. It's been over two years since this post and it still makes the exact same noise. I just swapped to 5w40 and the noise is still there but it's a little faster.

well .. if it survived so long.. but still it would be worth checking. Maybe jsut get the valve cover of and measure the clearances.
Easy job and something may pop into your view while at it

Mine makes the same noise, has since I got it back in 2013. Just hit 109k miles on it. Doesn't seem to be an issue.

I have a 2015 3.8 that was making the exact same noise. I know it's GDI and I'm used to the sound of the HPFP, but the noise I heard was new and intermittent. I narrowed it down to the purge control solenoid valve (PCSV). It connects with a hose to the throttle body just behind the throttle plate. Putting my finger on that hose I could feel the pulsation at the same frequency as the noise. After 20-30 seconds it stopped. Reading the service manual it might be normal, it says the valve operates on a duty cycle.

I know you have a 2.0T but the PCSV is part of the emissions control and I doubt the valve operates any differently on the 2.0T. If anyone knows where that is you can see if it's the source of the noise.
