Short Throw Shifter, Bushings and Fluid

I have searched, but I have not found a clear answer. People have installed/swapped these items to help fix/improve some of the problems they have been experiencing with their manual transmissions. The combination resolves the issues for some and helps others. That much I have gathered.

What about the people out there that have tried the above and have had no luck. Did they void the warranty on their transmissions with these mods (BTW, I have read several depends on the dealer/any mod can posts)?

I don't see why/how new and improved front bushings and the correct amount/grade of gear oil could or would void the warranty. If I had to guess, I would say that those two items would go unnoticed? The Short Throw Shifter, however, is hard to miss. That, and that It does modify the action of the shifting mechanism connected to the manual transmission.

I am considering all three mods. However, I am not doing it to "fix" anything. I just want a better driving experience. From what I have read here, it does deliver that (among other things).

In short, is the Short Throw Shifter one of those things that needs to be swapped out with the OEM shifter before going to a dealership?

I know that the answer for this MAY be a no brainer (for transmission work), but what about unrelated work?

Go back to the engine forum. Look down to about the 6th thread that reads Official Manuel Transmission Thread. There's enough reading to choke a hippo but dive right in and you might find your answer.
Keep in mind that I do not have a transmission issue (to date), and that I searched the entire site for an answer regarding my question. Unless, of course, there is a secret to searching this site that I am unaware of?

Although I do appreciate the FYI, it does not answer my question. I am sure that there are other people here that would appreciate more specific answers regarding the "SHORT THROW SHIFTER" question?

BTW. I am familiar with the Official Manual Transmision Thread...., lots of complaints! That is why I started another: http://www.gencoupe.com/3-8-v6/51656-manual-transmissions-anything-good.html

I'm not sure what you're asking here, but I can tell you doing the shifter/bushings/fluid changeout is the best MOD I've done so far. The stock shifter is garbage IMO. So if you're looking for a recommendation, I say do it no questions asked.

As for warranty issues, that's really on a person to person basis. I have no problems with my dealer, you might.
Since these cars are new, there may not be a lot of data out there regarding their (the Short Throw Shifter) effects on the transmission.

So far, everything I have read about the STS has been positive. My concerns are whether the shifter accelerates any underlying issues with the M/T down the road? The flip side is that it may actually prevent the said issues? At this point, I don't believe there is enough data out there to prove it one way or the other?

If swapping the stock shifter for a Short Throw Shifter keeps your car out of the transmission shop (and ups your driving experience), I would say that it is indeed a good investment.

However, if the Short Throw Shifter contributes negative wear to the M/T over time and puts your car in the transmission shop sooner than later with the possibility of a voided warranty (because of the installation), then I would say that it may not be a good idea to install one?

Again, I don't think there is enough data on this since the cars and the shifter are both new to us and each other.

Having said all of that, I have already received my bushings, the TWM STS and boot is arriving today, and I have appointment on Saturday to have it all installed with a fluid change.

I did the fluid change to "fix" the issue and for me it was enough. I Also changed (which bled) the master cyl fluid for the clutch too. IMO the OEM stuff they put in is pure crap as fluids go. NOT a fluid you would find in most preformance oriented cars. The only "offical" fix I did was have the dealer lube and adjust the linkage from my shifter to the box which DID make a big diff as it was too tight.

I have the TIC bushings and short shifter on the shelf... they may be going back though as the car is in the shop from an accident and may be totaled.

I plan on putting these in without batting an eye. As someone said, the OEM shifter is pure garbage. Too much flex and wiggle in the mechanism and the rubber stay bushings are crap. EVEN THE TECH who worked on my linkage said they are "under par" compared to other hyundai's in his mind.

To me, the genni is like a row boat compared my my old 350z... BUT I also had a short shifter in it too <grin>.

IMO:
1) change fluids as it CANT hurt and better fluid is always nice (helped me)
2) get the shifter and bushings because its a cheep and nice upgrade that you use every day and makes the drive experience better.
3) To the question of if a Short shifter will make a problem worse - If there is an issue in a trans where the synchro's are not spinning up quick enough... then yes it COULD affect you in a negative way. However generally speaking a smart driver will still not force the gear, it will simply just be less movement for him/her to go from gear to gear.
4) YOU LUCKY PUNK can I have your trans?

Maybe this is a stupid question but I cant find anywhere that sells the Tic bushings? What website do you buy them from or do they come with the TWM short shifter?

BTW-had my tranny replaced about 2 weeks ago and so far its running GREAT. new tranny and new fluid. (crossing my fingers)
Hi Drnockers,

We do not offer the front bushings because they don't really make any difference. We tested some prototypes at the same time as we developed the short shifter and the benefits of the bushings were very close to none, hence why we never released them. The amount of work required to install the bushings is also quite significant for the not so significant performance gain.

The simple fact that our short shifter includes a ball bearings and stainless bushings system as compared to the stock rubber bushings will make a much more significant difference than that!

Hope this helps,

Frank
