Went to Drag Strip and I sucked.

I went to Royal Purple Park this weekend and got a couple runs in. Its my first time taking the Genesis. It had been a while since I had been to the track and I was pretty nervous. First run I just totally freaked out and spun the tires all through first gear. I was suprised how the RPMs would not stay steady. It kept dropping and I would have to give it more gas and then all of a sudden the tree started and I think I took off at about 3500 RPMS! doh!!

2nd and 3rd runs were about the same. Decent launches 2.1 60' times but I kept hitting the Rev Cut when shifting!! :mad2: Ended up with 14.1 on both runs with 99mph trap speed. Thats with hitting the limiter twice!

4th run I just wanted to get a clean run in and decided to Granny shift. Got a another 2.1 60' time and then when I shifted into 4th the car started to hesitate real bad. I was running out of gas!!! WTF!! NO!!!! :mad2:

It was to late to go get some gas. The place was packed now. I'm hoping the Reflash will let me shift properly because that sucked.

It does...trust me.
Isn't 14 sec supposed to be the stock 3.8 time? and I doubt an intake an exhaust will make a huge difference... I say not bad haha
I have a feeling that im going to suck too when I go this spring lol

+1...not that bad & you will get better.

Yeah, I have a feeling I will suck too when I visit the drag strip this spring since it has been over 20 years since the last time I was at the strip. I pray I haven't lost my touch, but we will see.

Thanks, but it should be able to make it into the high 13s. I would hope. Especially being so close to sea level. Hitting fuel cut for .1 of a second isn't going to help my ET.
We need some pros to come in here and give us some tips
I can tell u the stock tires and clutch suck. So upgrade those and u should get some time back.
The stock tires are decent. I've proven that a few times with sub 2 second 60" times. Infact I have my 1.88 time slip posted. A lot of people think they can just hop in a car and assume "its supposed to" run a certain speed. You don't look at other factors such as suspension and setup. Our cars aren't for drag, if they were we'd have a solid rear axel. I don't know how many times I've lost huge time because the ass end torques to the side, even half way down shifting into 3rd or 4rth. The other problem we have is the gearing ratio. You shouldn't have to be in 5th gear crossing the line, I can see 4rth but not 5th. We loose time because you have to shift to much.

Take the time to get to know your car and its querks, every vehicle is different. I'm no pro by any means, I do go to the track 1-2 times a week when the weather is good though.
questions

so i am new to the dragging @ the track, took my stock 3.8 last year i have some expenisve ass tires on it other then that she is 100% stock, i ran a 14.989 best time i could do, i had a experianced friend ride with me watching and he seemed to think every thing was fine and was shocked it was even that quick, the track i attend is known to be on the slow side and racing in +30 celcius is tuff... any suggestions??

thanks

What rpm did you launch, what rpm did you shift? Also do you your 60ft time?
I'm pretty sure with more practice I can get a sub 2.0 60' times. Maybe adjusting my coilovers and letting out some more air would help the launch as well. But the shifting is really what screwed me. Just need to practice or get a reflash.
drag racing done right at the track is much harder than people think! so many variables can mess you up and mess up your times.

Yep, but even as hard as it is, its nothing compared to road racing on a circuit track where you have to turn (both directions) & downshift as well as upshift, plus interact directly with other cars passing them etc.....:p
dont feel too bad i did horrible when i went as well. wont even post what times i got but i should be doing around the same times as you expected to pull. let me know next time you go to royal purple park i need to redeem myself lol. would also be nice to not be the only genesis there
My biggest problem is launching >_<
i agree blueflames_38, but i did get some good advise on that. its pretty destructive but the best way to launch. i was suggested to launch at 3k rpms and ride the clutch until i catch traction. this came from i forgot if it was either fatflyguy or surfmavrik. probably not going back until i replace the clutch and flywheel because i did have noticeable clutch slip as well which helped hurting my times along with 4 out of 6 horrible launches
Hardest part of launching was the rpms kept dropping on me. Couldn't just hold it at one rpm and watch the tree. I was able to get decent launches though.

WOT box would fix that ;)
Carlos, turn off the TC and remove some air in the rear tires. drop to 22psi or so. There is no rev cut with the TC turned off. That's just TC overaggresively kicking in when your tires spin between shifts. You are losing a lot of time just because of that alone. Run 1/3 tank of fuel. It's lighter but won't run out as fuel is sloshing around.

The guy that ran the 15sec, well it's all about the launch. If you are in an auto you need to have one foot on the brake and one on the gas to launch. The key to launching a manual is to abuse the hell out of the clutch and learn to keep the RPMs high and traction high using the clutch to manipulate the amount of hp to the ground. It's not pretty and when you get to the end the clutch will usually feel weird from all of the heat.

One guy said something like he is in 5th gear running the 1/4 in a GC. Um not in a 3.8 running high 13's you are not unless you shift at 4K. Swapping the diff to some lower gears would benefit the 1/4 mile time and should still allow you to remain in 4th for the duration of the run. Addtional shifts can slow the car down but then the motor has more leverage on the road w/ a lower (higher numerical) gear ratio resulting in considerably more acceleration while in gear. For optimized 1/4 mile times you want the cars engine to just pass peak hp in top gear just after passing the 1/4 mile finish line. This means you would be in the top of 6th gear when crossing the line and it would reduce 1/4 mile times notably. Not very usable on the street howeever.

To do 1/4 miles I would have went w/ a Mustang for sure. This car does not love to be launched like that.
