I have a 2015 3.8 genesis coupe that I hope to in the future maybe turbo or atleast give it a better tune but I want to learn how to do it myself. Where do I start to study and what are some things I need to get to start studying the numbers the ecu gives? I've got literally no experience in tuning unless its the old school carburetor.

Well.. You picked an odd car to start on. Something cheaper with an ECU you can tune would be much more ideal for learning purposes.
Personally I went to school to work on cars, quite a bit of wrench time to begin with but not a whole lot of book-smarts such as knowing of an optimal AFR vs "well thats leaking, time to take a dozen bolts off and not lose them".

Probably learned more from youtube to be honest than a year there during that time. But anyways, Your best bet is to grab an OBD2 reader or compatible tool.
I use my phone or my Microsoft Surface tablet w/ keyboard and a OBD2 to USB plug and the software that came with the plug (like 10 dollars total : ebay).
From there you can monitor pretty much everything (assuming all of this is new). I wouldn't jump into the ECU tuning world immediately or attempt to unless you have an understanding of all the values that you can see with the live data shown to you on the OBD2 Tool or device to monitor.

I'd suggest reading that, entirely, before continuing. It's a brain stretcher for sure. Take notes on anything Voltage, MAF/MAP, or Fuel Trim related comments unless you already know those.
Knowing your Air to Fuel ratio, voltage at any of the dozen sensors, and Fuel Trim can diagnose most, not all, but most issues if you aren't getting a DTC (Diag Trouble Code) and cant see anything wrong mechanically.

If you're further than anything I just said and understand that all, let me know. Same for if it's way over your head. If you know the old school carb, you're doing better than most people just starting mechanical repair w/o experience in their 2005+ vehicles who will never see one in their life.

Side note: If you want a turbo, Kits are already available that include a tune. Without taking your vehicle to the shop to have it installed/tuned you would be either buying a can tuned ECU or sending yours in to have it can tuned (can tune as in basic preset preferences and values safe for 99% of users w/o specific drastic performance changing parts outside of said tune kit).
Which would be a lovely amount of boost in performance. To even simplify the monitoring of things, a wideband sensor mounted on your exhaust would give you an idea if something is about to go wrong (though not always true, just a "if it helps good, if not at least I tried" confidence booster) so you know not to hammer on things if you're getting far more fuel or air than what should be com-busting.

I did a little bit of researching here and there and i see alot of people say about 12.5 AFR is the highest. I also was looking into getting an OBD2 tool but i didn't because i had thought it'd be a waste of money but im seeing it so useful now with not just my car but other peoples so i might change my mind and just get one. Looking at videos it doesn't look too hard to do i mean what im picking up from it (im sure theres more to it) is just to adjust AFRs then advance or reduce timing to have no knock which is lovely that our cars have a knock sensor anyways but the only thing id be sketchy on is possibly is what afr/timing the optimal power is at. i know im pre planning majorly but i really would like to dry sleeve my block, PnP heads, build the engine 9:1, and turbo it obviously but what i would love to reach is about 600-700 hp now for that and dont know if 93 fuel would be enough or if that would be an e85 fuel application. then obviously do a quaife diff, cnc diff cover, sedan rear subframe with a 4th mounting hole, then a solid drive shaft. honestly any info you had along the terms of anything i would be appreciative on where to start but being younger i guess i could consider myself pretty tech savvy and tech stuff is fairly easy for me to pick up on.

yeah obdII to bluetooth with the torque app is way usefull

moding timing and afr is not really hard WHEN you have the proper software

currently easy tuning software for gen are hard to find

well i have some time and supposedly Lap3 was working on something for end user tuning so maybe by then all will be situated.
