Thought id throw together a DIY for Aerocatch pins. It may look intimidating because of the design of the pin, but its pretty easy to do.

DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible if you mess up your car. This might not be the best method for installing these pins, but this is how i did it.

Tools needed:

Masking tape
Grease
Dremel with cutting wheels
Cutting drill bit
pen
allen wrech

Let me start by saying it will be easier to do both sides at the same time. It makes aligning the pins easier.

Step 1 Start by masking off the general area in which the pins will go.

Step 2 Locate and remove the bump stop (Pictured below) that is near the headlight. This is where the pin will go
Image

Step 3 The pin itself will need trimmed down at least 3 inches. Use the dremel to cut the pin.

Step 4 Install the pin where the bump stop used to be. One nut and washer will go on the top, while one nut and washer will go onto the bottom to secure the pin in place
Image

Step 5 Put a little grease on the top of the pin. This will be used to mark will to drill the initial hole in the hood.

Step 6 Close the hood to mark where to drill. The grease stop shows you exactly where your pin will go through the hood

Step 7 Drill exactly where the grease is up through the hood, You will then want to close the hood to make sure the pin easily slides through the hole:

Step 8 Use the stencil provided to draw exactly the angle you want the latches to sit (Pictured above as well) Make sure both sides of the car look the same!

Step 9 Prop the hood up slightly so you don't cut anything under the hood. Use the cutting drill bit to take a rough cut and slowly work your way around the stencil.

Step 10 Make sure that your latch snuggly fits in the hole you cut
Image

Step 11 After the latch fits snugly, you will need to adjust the pins accordingly to ensure they work properly.

Step 12 Mark where the holes will need to be drilled to secure the latch in place and then drill the holes.

Step 13 Now is a good time to remove all the masking tape. Next using the screws provided, secure the latch in place. This is to temporarily hold the latch in place.

Step 14 This is where it gets a little tricky. You will need to cut the bottom layer of the hood bigger to expose the screws used in the last step.

Step 15 Using the hardware provided, put one washer and one nut on each screw and tighten until snug! (as you can see in the picture, i have about half of the nuts and washers on for reference)

Step 16 Clean up all the fiberglass dust you just got everywhere and enjoy the finished product!

It depends on who holds the events, but my lapping club insists on them because they don't want the be liable for any accidents that could occur from another members failed hood slamming into oncoming drivers, and also the risk of not being able to see where you are going if the hood flops over the windshield.

I was at a time attack event last year, and I saw them wave down a fully race prepped 944 Porsche Driver because is single sheet aluminum hood (held down with 4 hood pins) was flopping about too much. He was asked to secure the thing down with race tape....

BTW I'm doing this in the spring, so x2 on being scared cutting into a perfectly good CF hood.

so getting on topic, i really like this. Can you post more pictures? a zomed out veiw to see both pin's at the same time, my brother had pin's like this on his 94 5.4l stang CF hood as well, and ya this is needed. he had the OEM lauch plus the 2 pins and you have to lock the pins in, if u forgot you'd notice a new seconds on the highway

thanks!

will probably have to do this soon... but will check how mcmonopoly's hood goes :)
didnt tried out the cf hood yet on the road to see if it moves... its ark cf hood

Stevejohns: do you know what exact size bolts you used to attach the ARK hood to car brackets as oem doesnt fit the threads
and also did you reinstall oem hood prop, my oem hood props ''ball'' doesnt fit in the pre drilled threads in the hood either

Please dont reinstall that oem hood strut, you will destroy your hood trying to close it, or atleast it sure sounded like it when I tried it with mine. You are correct that the oem ball doesnt fit in the hood, and I cant remember the size of the new bolts for the hood.

oh and here is why you need hood pins on cf hoods... its mcmonopoly's hood at around 100 KM/H

click on title of the video to play and turn your volume down a bit

yes but they go straight through the bracket if you dont add washers
id prefer a bigger bolt head so if the washer bends the bolts is still retained
thanks for the info to you and kamkaze
im done hijacking your thread :)

thank you for this write up, I will be doing this next weekend.....

" Step 14 This is where it gets a little tricky. You will need to cut the bottom layer of the hood bigger to expose the screws used in the last step. "

This was the only part that I did not understand though, what do you mean exactly?
