Bad Gas Mileage

I live in Houston and do quite a bit of city driving but has ranged between 12-16 MPG. I think this is pretty pitiful considering the EPA ratings. I have used both the computer and manual calculations for fuel consumption. I don't drive like a maniac either. I called Hyundai and they told me to have the dealership do a "fuel consumption" test. I called the dealership and they said all they would do was drive out a full tank of gas and measure it. This is what I have been doing! Any suggestions?

i just bought my car 2 weeks ago and on the dealer fill up i got 19-20 almost all city and filled up at half tank and im getting 21-22 on my second tank in my 2.0t m/t

Mine gets 22 - 24 mpg in mixed driving. Although I cannot imagine getting over 27 mpg on the highway. How you drive this car makes a huge difference. Get up to speed reasonably quickly and then go really easy on the pedal. I run Torque periodically so that I can monitor the engine parameters and sort-of train myself. Despite the EPA numbers this is a heavy car, powered by a small engine with extra mechanical losses (tranny, rear differential, etc.) The mileage I get I think is pretty good all things considered. I do use the turbo to merge into traffic and just sometimes have fun. This is a DD for me so it is my commuting mule.

Just took a trip from Camarillo, CA to San Francisco.

Stopped for gas in Salinas, the Genesis calculator said 24.1 average (all 101 freeway, reset when I filled up before leaving, 2 miles for 101). I filled up and calculated it manually, 27.8.

My car is a 2011 Auto 2.0t, average speed 72 (cruise control), my wife and I were in the car, with suite cases.

Not to bad we were not upset with the numbers. Although our friends following rented a Hyundai Elantra 2012, it aveaged about 36, lol

My daughter had the car yesterday and I can tell based on the odometer and tank level she got pretty lousy mileage :squint: How you drive the GC 2T is really significant. Hooking-up Torque to my wife's Honda driving style is not as important. My daughter said something about it was fun to drive  so perhaps she hit the turbo a few times...

Get up to speed fairly quickly and then hold it with a very light foot. Your mileage will increase.

So I was at the dealership yesterday getting my oil changed. They had a 2012 Gen Coupe 2.0t Auto like mine and the gas milage was corrected to 17 city 27 hwy, that is more like what I am getting lol

Really? Well, that would be more in line with reality. One reason I bought the 2.0T is that it is my DD and errand rat so I wanted better mileage. Based on all the input on this forum there is little difference between the 6 and the 4. I think the 4 has a slight edge, but not much. The Hyundai web site is still reflecting the 20/30/23 EPA ratings.

Just went through another tank and averaged 27.4 or 411 mi until I filled up. Thats with mostly highway and some city driving but no traffic. My previous best was 430 miles per tank earlier last year.

Base 2.0t 6sp the only mod on the car is a cone filter on the stock intake tube

Just to add a bitter comment: tried holding staying under 3000rpm when pulling from a standstill, never over 60 on the highway...saw easy 29-31 mpg. When i realized the Coupe can deliver as advertised, I floored it, and mpg went to my usual 20-22.

Yup! Good times. I've found this to be true as well. Even my conservative driving style, as laid as back as I can get, is too aggressive for high mpg.

I've been experimenting the last two weeks with the 3000 rpm number mentioned by jvsantosmd. Last week I drove my normal way and enjoyed the car, had a 120 mile each way road trip this weekend, and this week I'm doing everything I can to stay below 3000 rpm on my daily commute (this takes all the fun out of the car btw). Here is what I've seen so far. FYI, these numbers are based on the dash gauge's average, not true fill-ups. Both tanks running QT brand 93 octane.

Last week city mpg: 21.5
120 mile Hwy trip @ 75-80mph: 29.4-30.1
120 mile Hwy trip @ 65-70mph: 31.4-31.6
This week city mpg (under 3K): 27.2-27.4

Conclusion, drive conservatively, get decent mileage. Drive the car as it should be driven, mediocre to crappy mileage.

I used to drive about 190miles to visit a friend of mine and on a full tank i'd use only about a 1/4 take of gas if i'm not mistaken, i'd say thats pretty good mpg highway

Well that's true for any vehicle.........
I'll agree with most, but not all vehicles. My 04 STI got 16.5-17 mpg city or highway, driving conservatively or beating on it. That's why it had to leave, it was killing my wallet. My 02 WRX can gain about 2mpg (20 vs 22mpg city) driving it like this, but it's much harder to keep it below 3000 than the Genesis.

Hmmm, my Stealth was NA with the 5 speed and I am getting better mileage than that car got. Once you get to speed you have to really go light on the throttle. The smallest squeeze on the pedal destroys your mileage...at least on my slushbox. I would like better mileage, but I did not buy this car with that goal in mind. :dunno:

I got rid of the tt stealth in 94 and had my spare rims/winter tires in garage loft from winter 94 until winter 2010/11. i put 2 of the wheels on back of gc for this and last winter. stored 17 years and now getting some use. the other 2 are on my sister-in-laws gc. I can honestly say this is the worst car i have ever had on fuel, but i bought it because i thought it would be a lot better than my truck. mid to high 20's with canadian gallon IMO is not good fuel economy. I was a lot younger when I had the other cars and drove a lot faster so I cannot blame it on my foot. these cars are pigs on fuel, sticker said 43. i put a k&n filter and did the silencer delete and will be going back to stock in spring, just to see if i get mileage back.

My after market intake helped my mileage by 1+ and I have found higher octane helps slightly. I won't argue lousy mileage, but bear in mind that a 2.0 liter engine is pushing a 3400+ lb around. Turbo or not that little engine has to work pretty hard. Mileage should improve over time as the car loosens-up a bit (fingers crossed...). I ran Torque on my way home from work today and just that visual feedback helped my mileage quite a bit. Honestly, that is a hard way to drive.
