For those that repainted 2013 pearl, did you get perfect match?

I have a 2013 Genesis Coupe with white satin pearl that had the pealing issue on the front and back bumpers, and my side skirts started to peel as well. I am sure some of you have encountered this based off the threads I have searched. First it would turn into small yellow dots, and then it would just start to come off.

Last year I had a friend (that owns a paint/rebuild shop) repaint it after the dealer would not do anything. I just wanted it to look good again so I did it as quick as possible. In the sun light, it is a perfect paint match, but on cloudy days I can really tell a difference between the side profile upper side and the side skirts.

Do you folks think there was a way to really match the 2013 white satin pearl for the Gen Coupe? Is it just the sunlight /lack of sun light. Because if you can see in the picture I tried to upload here, there is a portion of it under the door that really does match the full body. Is it just the way it is with it being angled slightly down for a sideskirt? Maybe I lucked out and it was not the best paint job lol. I really wish the initial paint did not peal with the defect that I have read about.

When I look at the car in bright sunlight, and the car is clean. It honestly looks perfect. The pearl effect looks the same. That is why I do not complain. Is this just because of the plastic parts? Did any of you match it perfect 1 for 1? I swear in the sun light, it looks perfect. Could there have been an error? I am likely not going to do anything about it, aside from keeping the car clean. But what do folks think? What experience have you had so far with your white satin pearl paint from the initial production of the car?

I had the front bumper, back bumper and side skirts all painted at the same time with same paint batch. Just annoying on Cloudy days. lol

It is the evening now and dark out. But when I put my phone flashlight up on it. The pearl effect is identical. It looks the same white. Without this phone light or the sunlight though. It is what you folks see.

Idk. At the end of the day, i guess i could always ask/beg the dealer to take these side skirts, and i pay a "reasonable" fee for brand new ones that are stock white pearl if possible. I doubt it would destroy the wallet to get new ones. It isnt like a new front bumper id say?... Or I just forget about it. I am getting wheels this week anyway so I am sure it will look fine regardless. I just think it is a bit weird though on cloudy days.

In your photos even before the repaint the plastic peices are a bit darker than the rest of the car. I dont think replacement plastics come painted even from Hyundai. If the paint job you have now is otherwise good, id chalk it up to just being the nature of the beast and leave well enough alone. The pearl white was what i really wanted when shopping for my then new 2014 3.8 auto ultimate.

.....

You folks are going to think I am trolling. But I just left a touchless wash this morning and as I parked at work I noticed that part of the back end of the passenger side - side skirt is peeling.

I had it repainted 12 months ago. You have got to be kidding me lol. I swear I am not trolling or anything. Just my luck. It doesnt look as deep as the 2 pictures i showed above, but it is about the size of one of the peelings on the skirt in the images above.

I am going to start googling metal side skirts if possible. This is unbelievable. I am actually going into a Hyundai soon in the next few weeks to negotiate for a new car for my mom. I am going to ask them about this peeling stuff again and see what can be done. Maybe if the dealer paints it somehow or takes it to one of their shops. It will not peel again.

Maybe the error was mine in taking it into the touchless wash?... But i have been going there once a month anyway. Maybe the water sprayed too hard or the wax at the end. It had clearcoat protectant as well though.

Hi there, sorry to hear about the bad luck you’ve been having with your paint. I’ve got a similar thing going on with my pearl white 2013. I have the gold flakes/yellow dots on the front bumper below the fog lights and the middle section beneath the grille. It’s not too noticeable from far away but up close, it looks hideous. It’s been like that for a little over a year and luckily the paint hasn’t started peeling. But it is garage kept, so hopefully it stays that way. I tried to have it repainted under warranty, but unfortunately I was denied. Hopefully you have better luck when you go in to the dealer and talk to them. I actually posted a link to an article about paint peeling on white Hyundai’s in the Rail Rust thread if you wanna show it to them. Just so they’re aware of the problem and hopefully they issue a recall or something.

Thank you. I will check it out.

My car originally started with yellow dots in the front and back, the peeling was about 1-2 years later. It was minimal at first. Then the dots became bigger and more present. It sucked. in the repaint last year I think the front and back look perfect atm. It is just the side skirts atm.

Idk if it was the car wash that compromised the sideskirt yesterday. It was just a touchless one that sprays soap, water, wax, I had been going for years. As I was wiping the car sides down I saw the peeling. I instantly had a bad gut feeling lmao. It sucks that this is even an issue. All I want is for the car to be clean. It shouldnt mess up like this when you have not been in an accident.

My mom ended up getting a new 2020 Hyundai this week at the same dealer. I will try to ask and perhaps theyll help me out of some courtesy.

Thanks for the comments folks. Also sucks that there are no metal varients of the side skirts. If I could pay a bit more for it I would.

It’s a shame, the pearl white is my favorite color on Gen Coupes, but it seems like they all suffer from this same issue. I’m the second owner, so I don’t know how many times the previous owner ran it through the car wash, but that’s no longer an option for me, as I have parts wrapped that I don’t want getting messed up. I do have some slight peeling near the edge of the passenger side headlight, but it looks like it may have been due to rock chips or debris. It also seems like the clear coat on my mirrors and driver’s side rear panel have lost the glossy look they had to em when I had just purchased the car. I’ll probably just end up wrapping the entire car, rather than having everything repainted though.

So I'm in the same boat with the AT paint code and a failing rear bumper. I have had paint quotes from $500 to $1400 with a new oem bumper sprayed. 3 stage pearl is a struggle for even the best painter. They most definitely have to spray test panels. There are so many factors it will almost never match. Half my car has been painted and fools most paint shops at first glance but upon further inspection and lighting you can see the color match issue of a pretty good paint job. There are also 3 AT color variants of paint for our code. Best advice is use a reputable shop that stands behind their work and will guarantee you a match and warranty the work for life, that will cost me $1400. I'm going for a cheaper job since the paint already has a mismatch. Plastic bumpers on cars usually have a slight mismatch from the factory on many cars.

I work at a collision repair shop. Bumpers and plastic rock panels with never be a perfect match. Even when they car is first painted brand new by the dealer, they never ever match perfect. Paint shop try their best to find a perfect match but even when matched in sunlight, there's still the sidecast mismatch and so many other factors. You can get a dead on match from looking at it straight on but then the sidecast will be off. Rematch the sidecast, then the straight on match will be off. Even the bumpers being plastic with the car being metal creates a mismatch problem. It's just how it is in the auto painting industry. On a side note I've got the shoreline blue and mine is failing too. The rear bumper clear coat is so faded and the hood is bubbling and peeling. Hyundai's paint work sucks.

As I’ve mentioned before, I have the yellow dots beneath my front grille and fog lights and I first noticed them a little over a year ago. Right now, I don’t have the budget to afford getting the entire front bumper repainted, but I was wondering if there’s anything I could do to make it less noticeable?

Perhaps vinyl wrapping the front bumper, plasti-dipping over those parts, or using a touch up pen or something? I know it would only mask the issue rather than fix it, but it’s such an eyesore to look at. I’d be open to any suggestions as long as it doesn’t end up looking worse than it already does. If not, maybe I’ll just end up wrapping the whole car someday haha.

Vinyl wrapping the car may be the only solution. Or a savings count for constant repainting.
My 2013 started with the rear bumper.. Painted... a few years ago. It's now starting to peel in a few small areas again. But I also painted the two side skirts. They also started with yellow spots on the flat horizontal area inside the door, that only sees sun when you open a door. This was 9 months ago. The painter asked if I wanted front bumper painted when he looked at a few chips. I said no I plan on getting a new one at some point after paying off the car.

Well Now Dead center right below the hood latch a large sheet of clear coat, 7" wide by 4" is lifting away on the front bumper. So sadly contestant re-painting or vinyl wrapping seems to be the only answer to the f'ed up paint.

My 2013 still has less than 50,000 on it. In excellent condition besides the constant every 12 month paint issues. I had wanted to keep it for a while but now I'm rethinking that.

a) I'm not sure what a total car wrap cost in San Diego??
b) Now long does a wrap last on a car that's mostly driven 10 miles a day during the week? My sweet 2 mile commute?
c) Maybe wrap the car keep it for a year and sell my low mileage ride?
