So I have a 2011 3.8 coupe grand touring with 163100+ miles on it and have owned it for a month now. I’m starting to get a little worried about this ticking sound it does. I told a buddy of mine and he said that it’s a knock and I should return my car back to the dealership I bought it from. It ticks when I step on the accelerator like around 1500-2500 rpm and then goes away. Normal? Or nah? Please let me ASAP. Thanks. :)

Is this when you are driving or when you are at idle? If you hear a slight ticking sound at startup or rev it a little and then goes away. That is just your injectors making that sound and nothing to worry about. Knocking has a little more deeper tone sound by a tiny bit. Sometimes at start up it’s to do with slightly worn cams but that’s not an issue If the oil is good. One thing to sum up is, if you beat on the car a lot while running 87 it will knock a tiny bit when it’s running super hot. So at least use mid grade is my suggestion for that.

I couldn’t hear anything in terms of ticking or knocking in the video. I did forget to mention. If it’s a metallic sort or sound and could possibly be coming from where the downpipes are. That is most likely your flex pipe. It’s very common on the 3.8s because they have crappy flex pipes. Can you get a video from the engine bay while your revving it?

Another common source of ticking on a high-mileage engine is the exhaust manifold gasket failing. This will not hurt anything and it is easy to fix. I replaced my down pipe last year because the flex joint finally gave out. Common as cars get older. On my 2.0 I did not get a ticking noise, but a deeper and louder exhaust note. My 1991 Stealth with a V6 also did the same thing; deeper and louder. On start-up injector ticking is common. If it is the exhaust manifold gasket I would expect it would be louder at start-up and then diminish as the engine heats-up and things expand. If the gasket has completely failed then you will get a steady tick, tick, tick which will change with engine rpm.

My ticking was unclear- thought to be possibly something in the driveline, only happened audibly under load around 2500 to 3500 RPM, and loudest in 3rd. After pulling the oil pan and finding metal flakes, the engine was ripped down to find rod bearings coming apart ( barely). The car had ~ 165k miles on it. If it is a good deal, drop the oil pan and have a look/ or have your mechanic do it.
