2013 Genesis Coupe Speculation Thread

1/9/12- Auto show season is here! With the debut of the NA version of the vehicle, we have a new thread that will hopefully be less cluttered than this one. It can be found here: http://www.gencoupe.com/general-dis...neral-discussion/85918-final-official-2013-genesis-coupe-thread.html#post947240

12/5/11 mod edit: I took all of the posts after the first official pictures and created a new thread so it's a bit easier to wade through. I'll be going through and cleaning the new thread up as well and moving some stuff around. Since the car has been officially revealed, I'm leaving this post closed. Please continue discussion of the new 2013 Genesis Coupe here:

Also, if you're reading this thread for the first time or visiting from another corner of the internet, the information below is from 8-31-10, and therefore was speculation a year ago.
This is the post where it all started. We still don't have confirmation of which engines or output the car will have.

Hey, Mustang, watch out! Hyundai is preparing a new 5.0 liter V8 engine that will deliver 429 HP. Of course, Hyundai did not say that with the new engine they would want to take on the Mustang, but it wouldn’t be as ridiculous as the race between Mini and Porsche! The output for the new coupe is even bigger than the one from the Mustang GT model that develops a total of 412 HP. The announcement was made by Hyundai in South Korea during a test drive for the new Sonata hybrid and 2.0T.

The new 5.0 liter Tau engine is a bored-out, direct-injection version of the 4.6-liter V-8 currently found in the Genesis sedan. Bore increases to 96 mm, an increase of 4, while the stroke stays the same at 87 mm. The result is an estimated output of 429 hp at 6500 rpm and 376 lb-ft at 5000 rpm with an 11.5:1 compression ratio. The new engine will be mated to an eight-speed automatic designed and manufactured by Hyundai.

The new engine is rumored to be available for the Genesis Coupe sometime in mid-2011.

You do realize the new Mustang GT will hang with a BMW M3 around a track no problem right? This is even with a solid rear axle. Give Ford some time to sort out a full IRS and the Mustang will be an absolute beast on the track.

ever bother searching around before starting such a thread?

say a few threads below the top of the page?
You don't even have to use the search button for this one

EDIT: Oops sorry, didn't realize that, that thread was finally off the front page :p

Still search, especial of topics from articles a few months old. It more than likely been talked about.

meh, i'll stick with a big fat turbo or 2. I could still get a hefty amount of HP that way ;)

Fail. We are the only ones with a V8 in their GC! LoL!

Why do these threads keep popping up??!?!?!!?!

Nowhere in that article does it say that the engine will be put into the coupe except for the title and the small blurb about rumours for the coupe at the end.

THIS ENGINE WILL NOT BE IN THE COUPE. PERIOD.
when the car was launched Hyundai said they can't put a V8 in it because the front end is too short. The car would have to be SIGNIFICANTLY modified to pull that off.
That is just not going to happen on a 3rd year car. It's not worth the investment.

What are you expecting in the 2012?

I went into my dealership today and had a long talk with one of their salesman.
I live in Tampa Area and the Hyundai dealer a few miles away is the largest volume dealer in the nation. We talked about some of the 2011's and he basically said how they were all disappointed there were no 'big' additions to the Coupe and as a result they were seeing less of an interest in them. Pointed out that the only changes were a different lip spoiler and a few other minor changes.
For 2012 they expect a performance upgrade for the 2.0T. Mentioned that we should expect to see the biggest changes with the 2.0T. They expect this mainly because the Sonata received a 274 turbo which should translate to a 2012 274 stock turbo on the Hyundai Genesis Coupe. He said anything less will be disappointing and embarrassing for Coupe owners.
He mentioned that it was simply talk amongst salesmen at the dealership.
I'll definitely be refinancing myself into a 2012 Genesis Coupe 2.0T Track come this time next year if that is the case.
Expecting to see any exterior/interior/engine changes?
I'm hoping for stock LED and perhaps a meaner looking front.

I think this one is a given and am surprised it didn't come with it. A seatbelt strap holder. You know, sits on the side of the seat and keeps belt in place and keeps it from snapping back when you let go of it (mainly other passengers) and also when I have my windows down the seatbelt bumps against the inside of the car from the wind.

1. I've said this a lot, but I have no qualms repeating it: how can any one be disappointed in the 2011 refresh? The only way you can be disappointed is if you were expecting something major, but there is no way you can expect a car maker to make drastic changes to a new car after its 1st year. Also, Hyundai gave zero indication that they would make big changes. The CEO of Hyundai USA said it himself back in spring (or maybe early summer): the only changes for the 2011 model would be small, with a focus on interior enhancements. After the CEO said that, you can be disappointed, but you can't ignore his comments and then be disappointed months later when the 2011 model comes out.

2. There were changes in the lip spoiler? There's a stock lip spoiler??

3. I don't know what to expect for 2012. On the one hand, Hyundai said they were going to add an AWD option for the next-generation GC. On the other hand, I doubt Hyundai will be able to pump out a next-gen GC by the 2012 model year. That would imply that the 1st generation GC only lasted for 2 years in North America. That's pretty damn short.

That said, Hyundai should probably make some powertrain changes to stay competitive. The newer Mustang V6 is winning over the non-enthusiast crowd due to lower prices and higher fuel economy. The upcoming FT86 is also a potential threat due to its yet-to-be-announced low weight. Lastly, the upcoming 2012 Hyundai Veloster will seemingly cannibalize some GC 2.0T sales. To prevent this from happening, I think that Hyundai should differentiate the GC 2.0T so then budget-minded buyers (specifically tuners) don't ignore it in favor of the cheaper Veloster...which is rumored to have an optional 2.0T of its own!

You can argue that the Mustang and GC are totally different (pony car vs import tuner car), the FT86 and GC are totally different (FT86's power to dollar ratio will be lower and it will focus on being lightweight), and the Veloster and GC are totally different (FWD hatchback vs RWD coupe). However, when it all comes down to the bottom line: price. Price is the big reason that people will cross-shop the cars that I've mentioned. After all, we've already seen dozens of threads confirming that people are cross-shopping the Mustang, the WRX, the 370z and others...with the GC. My car-enthusiast friends are all pretty open-minded and would consider buying a car so long as they love it during a test drive. They don't care if it's RWD, if it's a coupe, etc.

4. GenesisDan, what makes you think there will be a 2.0T Track for 2012? They already discontinued the Track trim for the 2011 GC 2.0T.

^What the...? I'm not a fan, but I do wonder why Hyundai doesn't mention the OEM Lip Spoiler in the brochure or on the official website or...any where at all?
